WHAT IS A PODIATRIST?

Podiatrists are university qualified, registered foot health specialists. Podiatrists are unique in the health sector in that they are specially trained in the diagnosis and treatment of conditions of the feet. Podiatrists have specialist knowledge of the foot, how it functions together with the leg and its impact on body posture as a whole. Podiatrists treat a wide variety of conditions that affect the skin, ligaments, muscles, bones and joints of the foot and leg. Conditions of the feet can be impacted by systemic medical conditions such as diabetes, poor circulation and arthritis. Further to this, bearing the weight of the body, the foot has a unique set of challenges that are related to load, pressure and forces acting on the foot and in turn structures above it, that when increased can result in injury and pain.

SPORTS PODIATRY & BIOMECHANICS

Sports Podiatry and Podiatric Biomechanics provide a unique skill set in assessment and management of foot and leg musculoskeletal injuries common to sports injuries from a functional perspective.

Poor foot and leg function can contribute substantially to sports injuries such as:

  • Shin splints

  • Achilles Tendonitis

  • Runners Knee

  • Plantar fasciitis

  • Heel pain

  • Iliotibial band syndrome

  • Metatarsalgia

  • Stress fractures

These common sports injuries can be very limiting, disruptive and frustrating your return to usual activity levels and training.
They can present with very complex underlying structural and functional mechanical disturbances.

Biomechanical factors can easily and frequently be overlooked in the management of musculoskeletal conditions, but when identified early can make a dramatic difference to your early return to sport and activity.

At SSP our Podiatrists have over 30 years experience in providing thorough biomechanical and gait assessment for identifying mechanical factors contributing to your injury or condition.

Your foot structure and gait pattern will be discussed with you in detail and its impact on your current injury as well as treatment options to improve your gait biomechanics. Improving your biomechanics during sport and activity not only aids in injury recovery but also enhances performance and minimises reinjury in high performance, repetitive or endurance activities.
